Personal account FAQs
Our prepaid debit card is 100% safe. We use bank-grade 256-bit encryption to keep money and data safe, and you can opt to access your account via a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID.
Imagine a row of jam jars on your kitchen table, each labelled for something like ‘Food shopping’, ‘Car’, ‘Pets’ or ‘Christmas’ with different amounts of money inside. That’s exactly how digital jars work in your HyperJar account. Of course you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to: you can use HyperJar just like you would a standard spending account.
But if you like the sound of jars, you can create as many as you like, name them, colour-code or personalise them with a picture, and add different amounts of money to each. Some people call this the ‘cash stuffing’ or ‘envelope’ money management method – we've just digitised it. And we know that millions of people find this the best way to feel on top of their money, however much they have. You can pay directly from any of these money jars by linking them to your HyperJar card, so you’re always spending from the right pot of money.
No, we don’t currently permit cash withdrawals with HyperJar cards. You can use an ATM to change your PIN.
You can use your prepaid HyperJar card anywhere Mastercard is accepted. So pretty much everywhere! There are a few exceptions which are common to prepaid cards. Your card won’t work with the ‘Pay At Pump’ option at petrol stations, for example, and we don’t allow payments for any gambling or betting, including the National Lottery. There’s a full list of excluded categories available here.
Yes, the HyperJar prepaid card is contactless for transactions of £100 and under. If you add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay, the transaction limit is removed.
You can also use ‘Chip and PIN’ (you’ll see your PIN in the app from Profile>Manage Card). As a safety feature we check in with you after five contactless transactions to ask you for your PIN, and do the same after a certain number of Chip and PIN payments just to make sure it’s you.
Yes, anyone aged 13+ can add their HyperJar prepaid card or Kids Card to Apple Pay or Google Pay from Profile>Manage Card.
After you’ve downloaded the HyperJar app, signed up and ordered your card, it’ll take around 7-10 days for it to arrive. Or you can opt for a virtual card, the details of which you can see in the app straight away. There are instructions on how to activate your card and what to do next.

The card is free, and the app is free to use and free to download from the App
Store and Google Play Store. No monthly or annual fees. It’s easy to run your HyperJar personal account without paying any fees at all - it’s just a matter of sticking to our limits for transfers in and out of the account. Check out the details here.
Thousands of HyperJar customers like to have a bank account to pay their big, recurring expenses and direct debits, and then use their HyperJar account for regular monthly spending and goal setting.
A joint bank account is a formal way to combine your finances. It is an admin-heavy process and usually links your credit scores, which is something to watch out for if your partner or friends have had money problems in the past. HyperJar is an instant, informal alternative - so not a joint account, but you can create instant shared ‘joint jars’ with other HyperJar customers in seconds and close them just as fast when they’re no longer needed. This means you can keep your personal spending separate from joint expenses all in one place.
